Your liver is a vital organ that filters and works hard to detoxify the blood that comes through your digestive track before it reaching the rest of your body. The liver deciphers what’s beneficial for your body and what is junk from all of the stuff you eat. Because your liver is working so hard it’s nice to give it a little break by eating those foods that are naturally detoxifying, like beets!
Uber high in antioxidants, this colorful root vegetable is jam-packed full of nutrients that have been shown to be cleanse and detoxify. Imagine deep cleansing on a cellular level.
Betaine, for example, helps the liver cells get rid of toxins. Fiber, like the pectin present in beets, clears out the toxins the liver removes so they don’t attempt to comeback into your body.
The blood-red color of beets comes from a powerful group of antioxidants called betalains. These betalain pigments with high anti-inflammatory properties also help to encourage the detoxification process.

In addition to being full of health boosting benefits, beets can be used in everything! Blend a beet in your morning smoothie for beautiful color, chop and roast a few for a salad, you can even bake with them for a natural red velvet experience. Here’s a deliciously healthy Red Velvet doughnut Recipe to start you detoxing your liver today!
(Vegan, gluten free, flourless, free of refined sugars)
1 1/2 cups gluten free oat flour
2 flax eggs
3 Tablespoons cocoa powder
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 Cup beet purée
1/4 cup applesauce
1/2 cup maple syrup
1 Tablespoon vanilla extract
Preheat your over to 350°F and lightly grease a doughnut pan with coconut oil. Stir together your dry ingredients in a large mixing bowl and whisk together until well incorporated. [It helps to sift the cacao powder to break up clumps]. Now begin n to add in wet ingredients, combining flax eggs last. Pour or scoop your batter evenly into the doughnut pan, you may have extra batter for an additional doughnut. Bake your doughnuts for 10-12 minutes.
When the doughnuts have cooled, frost or glaze them as you’d like. The doughnuts pictured here are frosted with a slurry of almond butter, cacao powder, maple syrup and coconut milk to thin…. and a few edible flowers, too!
