Sometimes the most simple desserts are the most delicious.
Some people find it better to “simply” to get in their cars, drive all the way to the grocery store, and then pay for an overpriced carton of “natural” ice cream.
Moving beyond the fact that I’m not an advocate of dairy, you should probably know that these ice creams are not made of simple ingredients… cream, sugar, happiness. Nope. Check the label. You’ll no doubt find things like “natural” flavor, carrageenan, sucrose, maltodextrin, or fructose… the list goes on.
Here is the list of ingredients from a well-known “light” ice cream:
“Ingredients
Non-Fat Milk, Cream, Chocolate Fudge Swirl (Maltitol Syrup [Sensitive Individuals May Experience a Laxative Effect from Excess Consumption of This Ingredient], Water, Cocoa Processed with Alkali, Modified Corn Starch, Maltitol [Sensitive Individuals May Experience a Laxative Effect from Excess Consumption of This Ingredient], Salt, Natural Flavor, Xanthan Gum, Sucralose [Splenda Brand], Nonfat Dry Milk), Maltitol Syrup (Sensitive Individuals May Experience a Laxative Effect from Excess Consumption of This Ingredient), Maltodextrin, Chocolaty Chips (Lactitol [Sensitive Individuals May Experience a Laxative Effect from Excess Consumption of This Ingredient], Coconut Oil, Cocoa Processed with Alkali, Butter, Chocolate, Cocoa, Soybean Oil, Soy Lecithin, Natural Flavor, Sucralose [Splenda Brand]), Polydextrose (Sensitive Individuals May Experience a Laxative Effect from Excess Consumption of This Ingredient), Cocoa Processed with Alkali, Glycerin, Cellulose Gum, Milk Minerals Concentrate, Mono and Diglycerides, Salt, Sorbitol (Sensitive Individuals May Experience a Laxative Effect from Excess Consumption of This Ingredient), Guar Gum, Sucralose (Splenda Brand), Carrageenan, Citric Acid, Vitamin A Palmitate, Acesulfame Potassium.”
Yikes! It sounds like this ice cream is actually only “light” on real ingredients.
Rather than risk your health for the next pint of ice cream, save yourself a few dollars and a trip to the store and make your own simple, and delicious ice cream at home.
