Along with maintaining a healthy diet, or way of eating, there are a few non-food ways in which to improve your quality of life…
Certainly I believe food plays a pivotal role in our overall health, however, there are other ways to give your health a boost, reenergize and improve your wellbeing.
Here are four simple ways to enhance your healthy lifestyle that have nothing to do with food:
Sleep More
Sleep is essential to our health and the majority of us do not get the recommended 7-8 hours of sleep. Now before you think, “I’m too busy to sleep”, remember that poor sleep has been linked to high blood pressure, depression, heart disease, obesity, diabetes and impaired immune system function.
Move More
I don’t advocate exercise for weight-loss (again, I believe what you eat plays a larger role), however, I do believe exercise has a great many other benefits. Exercise has been shown to reduce your risk of cancer, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, as well as, improve your mental health and bone health.
Connect More
As much as I love social media, these connections we make on-line aren’t nearly as satisfying as the relationships we develop in real life. Go out. Connect with friends and family. You’ll begin to feel a greater satisfaction in life and an overall improvement in mood and mental health.
Explore More
Go outside! Going outside more not only exposes you to sunshine that provide you with some much needed vitamin D. In addition, grounding and getting in the dirt has many benefits in itself like reducing stress and inflammation and improving your microbiome.

No post of mine would be complete without a tasty recipe, so along with these simple ways to improve your health, here’s a Simple Chocolate Doughnut recipe to improve your breakfast or snack time!
Simple Chocolate Doughnuts

Ingredients:
- 1 ripe plantain
- 1/4 cup unsweetened sunflower seed butter
- 1/3 cup real cacao powder
- 1/3 cup almond meal (or tigernut flour)
- 1 Tbsp baking powder
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon (optional)
- pinch of pink himalayan salt
- stevia for extra sweetness (optional)
Directions
Preheat the oven to 350°F and liberally grease a doughnut pan with coconut oil.
Puree plantain in a blender. [note – it helps to add 2 or 3 tablespoons strong brewed coffee or non-dairy milk to the blender to puree more easily]. In a separate mixing bowl, combine puree and sunflower seed butter then slowly sift in remaining ingredients until well combined.
Scoop batter into the doughnut pan and bake 11-13 minutes.
Remove from the oven and let that deliciousness cool before scarfing them down.
